Create a Kit Item - On-The-Fly

Kit items are a special items in NetSuite that can contain many member items and have their own special price. They can contain any type of item as members. Think of the times where you wanted to use kit items but just couldn't guess what items in a kit would sell, or there are just too many choices. We can help by allowing them to build a kit on-the-fly and add it to their cart for purchase.

For instance, a first aid kit manufacturer wanted their customers to create, purchase and reorder parts of a custom kit that they created from a list of hundreds of items, with various selection criteria. An industrial manufacturer wanted to have their customers select options from a list of items and service items based on a questionnaire selection criteria. Matrix options were out of the question as there could be over a trillion possibilities. Our scripts and techniques for creating kit items on-the-fly were useful in both cases and actually where the only possible way to deliver those items.

Installation Process

Every installation is different so we need to start with a conversation about your needs. The idea is to determine how best to allow your customers to select items that they can include into their unique kit.

We also will have to decide what displays if the user clicks on the link back to the item from within the shopping cart. We can send them to a special items detail page, back to the original starting point with their elements pre-filled, or our unique & very custom page that displays all the elements of the kit for reordering the whole or parts.

Once that is all worked out, it's just a matter of coding.

On Your Website

Kit creating can happen on an item detail page, or though a series of item list pages. Pricing can be calculated based on the logged-in user's price level, and/or a kit discount applied. The user can create a display name for the kit and even custom item fields can be filled in. Once the thumbnail image, kit price, & members are selected, our special code creates the kit item.

Cart and Checkout Process

Each kit item created only needs to have a unique "itemid", other elements like the display name can be used again. We usually base the itemid off of the customer ID (if login is required) or on a standard kititem (if one is being reconfigured). Scripts that run before the kit item is created determine a unique itemid for the kit being created.

Once we create the kit item we can add it right to the user's cart where they can then immediately checkout. On the sales order, the item appears as a single item, just like a manually created kit. The price is set when the kit is created.

A workflow can be set up to tell your sales staff of this special item and saved searches can be run to find and erase kits no longer needed.

Pricing for Wuebben Design Kit Item creation tool is time-based. Every instance is totally unique and custom. Rates are billed at our normal hourly rate. For a simple tool, expect to pay around $3000 +-. Extremely complex arrangements could run over $10,000. Like our Facets / Filtering for NetSuite SiteBuilder, there are no additional monthly or yearly fees .

After installation, any requested changes and updates done by us are billed at our normal rates. If you want to install it on multiple sites there may be additional charges.

NetSuite SiteBuilder has a basic cart and checkout turned on by default. There are limited customization possibilities and it is not responsive, so it is a good idea to upgrade. Fortunately, NetSuite offers a free download of the same cart /checkout / customer center that SCA uses, though modified for use with SiteBuilder. NetSuite has spent years developing and improving upon their latest cart / checkout / customer center. For SiteBuilder, they offer it as a free bundle. The current version is excellent with all sizes of screens –- from desktops to mobile handhelds -- and is designed to allow for easier updating in the future.

It is controlled via hundreds of modules of text, JavaScript files, and server pages. All text is customizable via an external file. Item cells are modifiable and can be added to with standard or custom item record fields. The checkout can be organized into multi-page or single-page checkout. It is near feature parity with SCA, is responsive, has more customization options; but it needs a few hours to install, add to your site, & customize to your exact needs. Give us a call.
